March 29, 1867 was a pivotal for Canada!

On this day in Canadian history, the Dominion of Canada was created. With the British North America Act, the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada were united as the Dominion of Canada, and the province of Canada was separated into Quebec and Ontario.

The British North America Act conferred on the new dominion a constitution, with the executive government vested in Queen Victoria and her successors.

While we celebrate specific dates, we cannot forget all the steps or the people involved in the discussions and negotiations that led up to this event.

Those stories are preserved in our archives for future generations.

    1. Many thanks Dave! I was looking up the back stories that surrounds this date – it was a complex journey. I am grateful for archivists for without their efforts to preserve records and documentation we simply would forget the past. It seems to me that the history of nations is the history of humanity.

  3. Thank you for this, really important for me! ! A PROCLAMATION, This is a “Keeper”, I had not seen or read this before. Canada has been so important in English history. The article above was one of the first in the history of the relationship between “mother” England and “child” Canada. We have had an excellent heritage. And we have done England “very proud”! And our flag is beautiful! ! !
