Albert Camus – Celebrating the 100th Birthday

Happy BirthdayHappy Birthday, Albert Camus.  Your life was a testament to courage.  Your devotion to  the cause of human rights continues to inspire us all.   Thank you.

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”

  1. “A person’s life purpose is nothing more than to rediscover, through the detours of art or love or passionate work, those one or two images in the presence of which his heart first opened.” Albert Camus

I like this quote, Rebecca. It made me think, do we, in fact, pursue that which first made us passionate, that which first made our heart open? What an interesting idea. I think there is a grain of truth to it.

    1. I think there is too! In all the hustle and bustle of life, with all of the many expectations that are inherent in our social order, we somehow forget what makes our hearts joyful and our existence complete. Perhaps we think that to pursue our goals, that we are selfish. It is something to think on….

      Always appreciate your visits!!! 🙂

    1. I would really like to delve more into their friendship and split. They had a different way of looking at life –

“A person’s life purpose is nothing more than to rediscover, through the detours of art or love or passionate work, those one or two images in the presence of which his heart first opened.” Albert Camus

“Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.” Jean-Paul Sartre

      1. I heard something on NPR about the rift between Camus and Sartre, and it seems to have related to loyalty to the Communist party. Sartre was convinced and Camus was skeptical. I’ll go with the skeptic any day!

      2. You and René are of accord – “In order to seek truth, it is necessary once in the course of our life to doubt, as far as possible, of all things.” René Descartes

I have learned that being a skeptic leads to a greater understanding and a more balanced view of life…
